Passport application flagged in interagency reform effort; two prison staff suspended.

The Federal Government has suspended two personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over attempts to procure an international passport for an inmate.

The suspension was announced by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, who described the act as “a misconduct detected through the automated passport application and other holistic reforms within the Nigeria Immigration Service.”

He said the breach was uncovered through interagency collaboration under the Ministry of Interior, calling it a clear violation of laid-down procedures.

Abubakar confirmed that the incident occurred two weeks ago and disciplinary action has already been taken.

“The two correctional personnel implicated in the incident were suspended by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) chaired by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo,” he said.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to discipline and warned that any staff found guilty of misconduct would be dismissed.
